NOAH

“Everett, I want you to get Lottie home,” I say just as I finish calling for backup. “I’m going to have a few men here in a minute to take prints. Then I’m going to take off to Leeds.”

Everett nods my way. “And I’ll be right on your tail as soon as I get her home.”

“What?” Lottie balks. “I know where the two of you are headed. You’re going to Leeds to try to knock some sense into Jed Silver’s head. We don’t even know if he left that note. I mean, how can we be sure that he’s the perpetrator?”

“He is,” Everett says with a growl. “The nature of the notes coincides perfectly with the timing of his release. Lemon, the man lives to get under our skin. We need to get the message across that he’s not allowed to toy with you or any of us. If we let it slide, he might come after Evie next, or God forbid start looking at how to hurt us through Lyla Nell.”

“Everett,” I grit his name out in an effort to covertly tell him to stop. But it’s too late, he’s gone too far.

You would think he’d be smart enough to know that Lyla Nell is a red line with Lottie. Evie is, too, but Lyla Nell is so very vulnerable. She couldn’t defend herself in any capacity. And Lottie’s mama bear instincts are as sharp as any grizzly’s.

“I’m going to kill him,” Lottie seethes. “I’m going to smash a chair over his head and crush his skull. Then I’ll kick him in the cookies just to make sure he’s dead. And if he’s not, I’m stealing your gun, Noah, and I’ll make sure the two of them meet.”

I shake my head over at Everett. “You don’t think.”

“You don’t think.” He pulls me by the shirt. “Next time keep your little side trip to Leeds to yourself.”

I brush him off of me with a shove.

He’s right. And I hate it when Everett is right.

A couple of squad cars pull up to the scene, and I quickly brief the officers before heading back to Lottie and Everett.

“I’ve got the note,” I tell them. “I’ll drop that off at my office before I come home. Lottie”—I pull her in for a quick embrace—“kiss Lyla Nell for me. Go make sure she’s safe and try to get some rest. Hopefully, whoever did this left a mess of prints behind and we can get to the bottom of it quickly.”

She nods. “Okay. And I’ll kiss the baby, but only if you promise to stop by in the morning and give her one yourself.”

“Deal.”

They start to take off and Everett pauses to turn my way and stare me down a moment as if he didn’t trust me.

He probably shouldn’t.

I jump into my truck and hit the road.

Jed Silver, I am gunning for you, and with the way I’m feeling, you might just meet my gun after all.
